Princess Marie reveals how she first felt about the Queen:
Meeting your parents-in-law for the first time is never easy and can be a pretty terrifying thing, so much seems to be at stake. First impressions lasts, as they say, and if your boyfriend’s mum is the Queen, well, you gotta be just a tad worried.
Princess Marie and Prince Joachim had been invited for lunch at Queen Margrethe and Prince Consort Henrik’s humble summer house, Fredensborg Palace, and the 38-year-old Princess remembers the meeting vividly.
“I was nervous. Very, very nervous. I think everyone is nervous the first time they meet a new boyfriend’s family and it doesn’t make you less nervous when it’s a royal couple. You always want to give a good first impression. The first meeting being nice, means a lot”, says Princess Marie in a new interview in the Danish women’s magazine Costume.
In Princess Marie’s case there was nothing to be worried about. Queen Margrethe and Prince Consort Henrik welcomed their daughter-in-law with open arms and were especially thrilled about her French origin, being born in Paris to French parents.
A half year later, after passing the first meeting with flying colours, Princess Marie and Prince Joachim announced their engagement.
In the outspoken interview, where she calls her husband Prince Joachim her “soulmate”, the Princess also commends the Queen for being so understanding and accepting towards her person. Especially in the beginning when she had to get comfortable in her new role as Princess, the Queen was supportive.
Embracing her public role was hard at first because Marie wasn’t used to all the attention that comes with being a Princess. Over time Princess Marie has gotten used to her royal life in the bosom of the Danish royal family, but she still misses being able to walk around without thinking about her appearance.
“I sometimes miss the anonymity and walking around without makeup on and having messy hair. I don’t do that as much any more, she says to the magazine while adding that she finds that freedom when she is in France or when she is visiting her old home town New York, where people don’t recognize her.
